Respect your child’s rights during your divorce

| Sep 10, 2021 | Divorce |

From a child’s perspective, going through their parents’ divorce amounts to a major life change. It’s easy for the adults to focus on themselves while they assume that the kids will just learn how to split their lives between two homes.

Any parent going through a divorce with their children should ensure that they’re doing what’s best for them. This includes making sure that the child’s rights are respected. Here are a few to consider:

Maintain and strengthen important relationships

Some children living through their parents’ divorce may feel as if one parent will be upset if they seem to have a good time with the other. Encourage your children to enjoy their time with your co-parent and to maintain relationships with other loved ones, regardless of which side of the family they’re from.

Stay out of parental conflicts

Situations in which parents argue can be traumatic for kids. Parents shouldn’t ever use their kids as messengers. They should instead address contentious matters away from the children. Presenting a solid parenting front whenever you’re with your children is often beneficial during this time.

Encourage your kids to be themselves

Children shouldn’t have to bear the burden of adults. Your kids still need to enjoy their childhood even though your marriage is ending. If possible, keep them in their extracurricular activities with other kids their age.

One of the best things you can do is to set up your parenting plan as quickly as possible after your split. This enables the children to adjust to their new normal. It also helps you and your ex to settle into the parenting roles that you’ll each have. Arrange your schedule based on what your children need now because you can always modify its terms later if necessary.
