3 tips to help you prepare for your U.S. citizenship test

Like many other Pennsylvania immigrants, your ultimate goal may be to become a permanent citizen of America. To achieve your goal, you must successfully complete a citizenship or naturalization test.

As you may know, the test is a source of anxiety for many hopeful immigrants, even those who have been here for a long time. The tips below may help you feel calmer while ensuring you are well-prepared for your test.

1. Use free resources

Contrary to what many believe, the American government wants immigrant citizens because they have the potential to contribute significantly to economic growth. As such, many government organizations, including the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), offer free resources that may improve your ability to pass the test.

Studying these materials ahead of your test appointment may help keep what you learned fresh in your memory.

2. Study as much as you can

Take every opportunity to study American history and government, as these are the main topics you will face on your naturalization test. Pennsylvania has many excellent libraries containing all the information you may ever need about the United States.

Taking advantage of this wealth of knowledge may help you pass the test.

3. Speak and write in English often

Some nervous test takers stumble over the English portion of the citizenship test, and this risk may be higher for those who primarily use their native language. While preparing for your test, try to read, speak and write in English exclusively.

Becoming more comfortable with the English language may also raise your confidence and improve all your interactions with USCIS officials.

The naturalization test is just one challenge to overcome in your journey to citizenship. Legal guidance can help you prepare for and rise above any others that may get in your way.
