How can preparation help keep drivers safe?

Have you ever jumped straight into your car and started driving, only to realize you need to sort a few issues out before you can settle and focus solely on driving? If so, you are not alone. A quick look around the roads will show you that many drivers also start driving before they are truly ready to do so.

Carrying out tasks on the move is distracting and increases your chance of a collision. So, as eager as you might be to just get going, it is far safer to get everything ready before you release the handbrake.

Things drivers do that they should have done before leaving

Here are some of the tasks drivers who are not fully prepared do:

  • Adjusting their seat and steering wheel: Have you ever set off, only to realize that the seat or steering wheel is in the wrong position for you? If you share vehicles with someone, then it’s probable you have. Sorting this on the move is dangerous and could cause you to lose control of the vehicle, so do it before moving off.
  • Having breakfast: The morning commute is full of drivers having their breakfast. Many would consider this a sensible use of time, but it is dangerous. You cannot maneuver the steering wheel as well when you have a coffee or food in your hand. Spilling a hot drink could also cause you to lose control.
  • Planning your route: Whether you plan your route on a paper map or type your destination into a satnav, do it before moving so you can set off in confidence with your hands on the wheel and attention on the road.

If another driver crashes into you, distraction may have been at play. Learning more about how to prove that could help you get compensation.
